What is the "Prepare to Work" program?

The "Prepare to Work" program is a Jefferson county education program that assists job seekers and entry level employees improve their skills for hire and advancement. These skills are necessary for landing a job in the Watertown area.

How do I participate for free?

The first step to enrolling in the "Prepare to Work" program is to complete a FREE WorkPlace assessment and advising session. This assessment is done in person at The WorkPlace on Coffeen Street in Watertown. Once your assessment is complete, your advisor will guide you to one of the two possible certification options that best meets your needs.

The "Essential Skills Necessary for Success" certificate focuses on the essential skills necessary for success in the 21st Century workplace. This Adult Education Department certification, offered by the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES is a 12-hour workshop that covers such topics as resume and application writing techniques, communication, and customer service.

The "Work NOW" certificate is a series of workshops that focus on technology and interpersonal skills. The two-day workshops are held at Jefferson Community College and include sessions on Customer Service through Empowerment, Communication in the Workplace, and Computer Basics.

At the completion of either program, participants will take four American College Testing WorkKeys® Assessments to document their core competencies. Successful participants can then present their certificate to a potential or current employer, showing they are "Prepared to Work!"

Tuition assistance is available! For a limited-time, the certification programs are being offered for free through funds provided by the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency, through funds provided for by a USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant.
